Our house style, writing and document standards

These guides are used by staff at the Council to help make our writing clearer.

Our ‘Standards for electronic documents’ are introduced as existing documents are updated. They don’t apply to the pdf versions of our printed leaflets. The standards are supported by a training course which is also open to external applicants:


Writing for the web
Guidelines for publishing online content, including tone and style, structure, and making information easy to find on search engines.

House style guidance
Guidance on important areas where inconsistencies and common mistakes arise. This includes apostrophes, capital letters, dates, numbers and people’s titles.

Standards for electronic documents
These publication standards apply to all corporate documents with the exception of those produced for print. They include rules for helping readers find documents online and read them on screen. They address important accessibility and security standards.
