To help young people make this all-important decision East Sussex County Council is holding three clearing events to help young people make the right choices and get a place on training or education courses.
The events, aimed at young people aged 16 to 18 who have just finished Years 11 and 12, will be taking place at:
- The Sun Room, Azur at Marina Pavilion, St Leonards, 10am to 1pm on Wednesday 1 September
- The Assembly Hall, Eastbourne Town Hall, Eastbourne, 10am to 1pm on Thursday 2 September
- Weald Hall, Uckfield Civic Centre, Uckfield, 10am to 1pm on Monday 6 September.
Set out as a market place, the events will have stalls hosted by post-16 providers where they can promote the courses and training that still have places available.
All East Sussex colleges, including Sussex Downs College, Plumpton College, City College Brighton & Hove, and Sussex Coast College Hastings, will be at the event as will school sixth forms and a range of training providers.
Young people will have a chance to chat to course tutors and sign up for a course there and then. Connexions Personal Advisers will be on hand to give advice and support.
All young people who have not had an offer of education or training have been sent a postcard inviting them to the event. Their postcard invite not only gets them in to the event but also means they can be entered into a prize draw for an MP3 player. For young people concerned about the costs of getting to the event there will be help with travel costs available.
The event is part of East Sussex County Council's work to increase post-16 learning in line with the Government's decision to raise the age for participation in learning. By 2013 all 17 year olds will be required to stay on in education, training or employment with training, and by 2015 all 18 year olds will be required to stay on in education, training or employment with training.
Councillor David Elkin, East Sussex County Council's Lead Member for Learning and School Effectiveness said: “The choices for young people have never been greater but those choices can be confusing and even knowing what is on offer can be a challenge.
“It goes without saying that it's really very important young people get the right information to make the right decisions about their future study and training. At these events we hope to bring together as much information for them in one place as possible.”
