Press release: Space hop special

Tuesday 3 August 2010

Young people with learning disabilities can join in a summer reading challenge and it's all free in local libraries.

East Sussex County Council's Library Service has organised ‘Space Hop', this year's summer reading challenge, with the aim of getting children and young people to read six books during the school holidays.

Included in the Space Hop events are multi sensory story sessions for children and young people with learning disabilities. Bag Books are great stories that use touch, smell and sound so everyone can join in the fun.

All are welcome at the free, multi sensory story sessions, which are being held at:

  • Eastbourne Library in Grove Road on Wednesday 11 August and on Wednesday 25 August – both at 2.30pm.
  • Polegate Library in Windsor Way on Tuesday 10 August at 2.30pm.
  • Crowborough Library in Pine Grove on Saturday 7 August and again on Saturday 28 August – both at 11.30am.
  • Lewes Library in Styles Field, Friars Walk on Saturday 14 August at 2pm.
  • Seaford Library in Sutton Park Road on Saturday 28 August at 2pm.

The County Council launched the Space Hop Summer Reading Challenge in July. Children can sign up at their local library and receive a ‘moving image' membership card and other goodies. Their mission is to take a consignment of books to the moon and open the first lunar library.

Space hoppers completing their mission will receive a medal and certificate and will be able to enter a free prize draw with the chance of winning prizes that include book tokens and tickets to attractions such as Sea Life Centre, Legoland and Chessington. Younger children can also join in the fun with special Space Hop Book Crawl.
