East Sussex County Council is putting the initial plans for its Library and Adult Social Care development at Warwick House – which include supported living flats for adults with learning difficulties – on show at the existing Seaford Library in Sutton Park Road.
Local people are also being invited to three ‘drop-in' sessions at the existing Seaford Library where they will be able to meet architects and council staff, see the initial plans and give their views. The drop-in sessions are on:
- Wednesday 4 August from 3pm until 8pm
- Tuesday 10 August from 5pm until 8pm
- Saturday 14 August from 10am until 12noon.
Subject to planning consent, the County Council is planning to open the new development in 2012.
Councillor Bill Bentley, Lead Member for Adult Social Care, said: “With this investment the County Council will be able to upgrade the older people's day service currently offered at Homefield Place in Seaford. This is great news for both the users of our service and for our staff who will transfer over to the new building, once it's built.”
Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services said: “I'm delighted that people in the Seaford area will be getting this stunning new library. The project promises to be a great success and I hope people will be able to go along to see our display or attend one of the drop-in sessions where they will be able to see the plans and give their views.”
Councillor Tidy added that the major cuts in government funding and squeeze on the public finances had meant a long hard look at priorities. He said: “We've only put forward schemes that we believe our residents want and need and this library and day services development at Seaford is one of those schemes.”
Progress to date on the scheme includes initial consultation with library users, people who use social care services, local councillors and the voluntary sector. The Council has also appointed architects for the Warwick House scheme – RH Partnership of Brighton and a construction company – Crispin & Borst of Maidstone.
As part of this new development, the County Council is working with Saxon Weald Housing Association to provide up to nine supported flats for people with learning disabilities. The flats, having their own entrance and lift facilities, will be provided on three floors adjacent to but separate from the main library and day service.
The supported flats will enable people with a learning disability to live in the community with support and care being provided by a separate staff team. The tenants will particularly benefit from the increased independence and choice afforded by this exciting new development.
