Press release: Village to celebrate new library

Wednesday 21 July 2010

Wadhurst is set to officially celebrate the opening of its new library next week.

Residents, library staff and local representatives will gather at the library at 1.30pm on Monday 26 July 2010 to highlight the new facility.

Library services in the area have been vastly improved since East Sussex County Council, working in partnership with the Wadhurst Institute Hall & Field Committee and Wadhurst Parish Council, moved from the old library room in The Institute to the former Social Club at the back of the Hall of Commemoration.

Since Saturday 17 July, when the new library opened its doors, people in the area have been benefiting from better facilities, extended opening hours and more library stock.

Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services, who will be attending the official opening, said: “The new library – which is three times the size of the old facility – has been totally refurbished, at a cost of £60,000, offering a bright and welcoming space for the people of Wadhurst.

“The major cuts in central government funding and the squeeze on the public finances generally mean that we've had to take a long hard look at our priorities and only put forward the schemes that we believe our residents want and need.

“Wadhurst Library is one of those schemes and I'm delighted that we're now about to officially celebrate this project with our partners at the Hall & Field Committee and Wadhurst Parish Council.”

The new Library has comfortable seating areas, toilet and baby change facilities, a larger children's library and a new teenage area with access to computers.

Wadhurst is one of a number of new library developments planned by the County Council alongside Rye, Seaford, Hastings and Newhaven.
