Press release: Pupils at book award bash

Thursday 17 June 2010

Children from 14 primary schools across the county will attend a special ceremony this week where the winner of the East Sussex Children's Book Award 2010 will be announced.

The pupils will be at Hailsham Pavilion to find out which book from the five nominated has been chosen as the top read.

The children attending the ceremony are from schools from towns and villages including Battle, Ditchling, Eastbourne, Framfield, Hailsham, Hellingly, Herstmonceux, Mark Cross, St Leonards, Uckfield and Wadhurst.

Organised by East Sussex County Council's Schools Library and Museum Service, the Book Award initiative runs for six months and includes book talks, book clubs, competitions and author events involving over 1,000 pupils across 42 schools. The youngsters have been busy since January reading the books and selecting their favourites in the awards that have again been sponsored by HSBC.

The five books are:

  • Dark Summer by Ali Sparkes
  • The TV Time Travellers by Pete Johnson
  • How Kirsty Jenkins stole the elephant by Elen Caldecott
  • Shark Island by David Miller
  • Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce.

The award ceremony at Hailsham Pavilion starts at 1.20pm. There will be presentations by children about each of the books and the winning author will be attending to collect their prize and meet the pupils.

Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services at the County Council, said: “The Book Award helps us to promote reading for pleasure and as a life skill. We want to encourage children to read more widely and get hooked on books. Feedback from schools has been excellent and some have said it's the best Book Award yet. I'm delighted that so many schools and children in East Sussex have taken part.”
