Press release: County Council and Rail Board complete Rye school site sale

Friday 4 June 2010

The former Thomas Peacocke Lower School site in Rye together with adjoining land owned by British Rail Board Residuary Ltd (BRBR) has been sold to J Sainsbury PLC for £3.4 million.

East Sussex County Council and BRBR completed the sale on Friday 4 June following a competitive bidding process between two major retailers.

Commenting on the sale, Councillor Tony Reid, Deputy Leader of the County Council and Lead Member for Corporate Resources, said: “We are very pleased that the sale has now gone through after a competitive bidding process and I would like to thank our joint vendors BRBR and the Council's Property and Legal Services staff for their work on this issue.

“We are satisfied that the deal with J Sainsbury represents the best value for our council tax payers. The Council's proceeds received from the sale amount to £1.9 million and will help to fund the capital programme and therefore investment in core services to our residents. This is even more important in these difficult financial times where every pound counts.”

Further information

If a planning application for the site now comes forward, this will be dealt with by the local planning authority, Rother District Council.
