Press release: Better and safer roads

Friday 12 March 2010

After continually inspecting all our roads across the county since the start of the year, we have fixed nearly 17, 500 potholes.

That's been achieved through routine inspections and in response to reports from members of the public.

With so many potentially hazardous potholes appearing this winter, we have been making temporary repairs so that we can fix the holes as quickly as possible and maintain safety on our roads.

We have also introduced a ‘seek and fix' approach to repairing potholes, while doubling the number of teams working on the roads. ‘Seek and fix' means the highways teams can make temporary repairs to as many potholes as possible in one area, in one visit, rather than waiting for them to be reported.

Now winter is coming to an end, we will be starting a two-year £8.5m programme of resurfacing work across the county on all major roads. This programme will begin in April.

Councillor Matthew Lock said, "Our teams are working around the clock where necessary, to systematically seek out and repair the potholes on our roads.

"We recognise that, like many other parts of the country, our roads have suffered as a result of the recent freezing weather, but with the programme of resurfacing work starting in the spring, our residents can look forward to better and safer roads. I do realise that there are a number of potholes still out on our roads. To report a pothole in your area please contact us on 0345 60 80 193 or via the County Council website."

To report a pothole or fault in the road please phone the East Sussex Highways Contact Centre number: 0345 60 80 193 or use our report a fault page:

Further information

The potholes are caused by water seeping into the surface of the road which expands when it freezes causing the road to crack.

The recent spell of extended cold weather has seen some of the worst conditions in 30 years and this resulted in an unprecedented number of pot-holes of varying size and depth across our roads.
