Tuesday 2 March 2010

This month, East Sussex County Council's Schools Library and Museum Service is playing host to two well known children's writers who have books nominated for the East Sussex Children's Book Award 2010.

Pete Johnson and Elen Caldecott will each be visiting two local primary schools to talk to children about themselves and their books.

The March visits start with Pete Johnson attending Mile Oak Primary School in Brighton at 10.30am on Wednesday 10 March. Other Schools going along to the talk will be Benfield Junior, Portslade Primary and Rudyard Kipling Primary.

Later on that day at 1.45pm, Pete will be visiting South Malling Primary School in Lewes. Other schools attending will be Ditchling Primary, Newick Primary, Harlands Primary (Uckfield) and Sir Henry Fermor Primary (Crowborough).

Pete is a prolific writer of children's books whose novel ‘The TV Time Travellers' is the nominated title for the Book Award. The story concerns two children who win a place on a new reality TV show called ‘Strictly Evacuees' where they must live as if it is the year 1939 and the start of the Second World War.

The visits continue on Tuesday 16 March with Elen Caldecott going to Buxted Primary School at 10.30am. Other schools attending are: Framfield Primary, Mark Cross Primary and Rocks Park Primary (Uckfield). In the afternoon at 1.45pm, Elen will be at Saltdean Primary School. Rudyard Kipling Primary and Benfield Junior will also be at the Saltdean School book talk.

‘How Kirsty Jenkins stole the Elephant' is Elen's first book for children. It is a warm and funny novel about family relationships which has been nominated for the Children's Book Award.

The March author visits follow two similar events that took place in February when authors Ali Sparkes and David Miller visited four primary schools in East Sussex. Ali went to Eastbourne and Herstmonceux and David visited St Leonards-on-Sea and Hellingly. All the visits have been kindly sponsored by HSBC and Microlibrarian.
