Press release: Walking in the trail of literary giants

Monday 8 February 2010

Residents and visitors to East Sussex can now discover more local cultural icons and explore the places that inspired them thanks to East Sussex County Council.

An Anglo-French project which allows you to take a virtual walk in the footsteps of famous writers has now been expanded by the County Council to include musicians and artists.

The ‘Culture Trail' initiative also involves Medway Council in Kent and the Somme region of France. A website – www.culturetrail.co.uk – provides maps showing where people such as Rudyard Kilpling, Charles Dickens and Jules Verne lived or stayed in each area. In East Sussex you could choose from a number of different people including E F Benson, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Virginia Woolf and A A Milne. The website gives a brief outline of their lives and a biography of their work.

Partnership organisers also hope to encourage people to visit the areas of interest and boost tourism.

The County Council's Library Service has developed the project and you can borrow books and CDs by and about the famous writers, musicians and artists from any Council Library in East Sussex. All you need to do is become a library member which is free and easy to join.

Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services at East Sussex County Council said: “This project is a very good example of partnership working and I'm delighted that we've been joined by Medway and the Somme on this initiative.

“The website takes you on a cultural trail of discovery, highlighting people of national and international importance. We also hope that it will encourage culture lovers to take holidays or short breaks in each of the three areas concerned and follow the Culture Trail for themselves.”

Library managers want people to get involved in the project. They want suggestions for inclusion on the Culture Trail website. You can email or telephone your suggestion to the County Council – email: library.culturetrail@eastsussex.gov.uk or phone: 01424 724617.

The Culture Trail partnership project is funded by the European Union as part of its INTERREG programme.
