Press release: Christmas tree recycling in Rye

Monday 4 January 2010

People in Rye are being encouraged to recycle their Christmas trees and help protect Camber Sands.

East Sussex County Council's Rye Bay Countryside Office has used old Christmas trees to help stabilise the dunes at Camber Sands for more than ten years.

The dunes need constant work to repair damage caused by being trampled underfoot during the busy summer season. The trampling kills off the fragile vegetation that helps stabilise the loose sand. The plants are also important for wildlife and provide shelter and food for many species of plants and animals.

The trees, which gradually break down, are partly buried in the dunes by the area Ranger and volunteer helpers. The trees help trap the sand blown in by the wind and hold it in place until new vegetation can grow and stabilise the dunes.

By donating their tree local people can do their bit towards recycling and also help conserve a valuable habitat – the only sand dunes system in East Sussex.
