Press release: Search is on for sporting stars

Tuesday 19 January 2010

The spotlight is set to shine on young sporting stars in East Sussex who will be applauded for their success and will have their ambitions given a cash boost.

East Sussex County Council is looking for nominations for a Sports Development Award under a scheme which recognises and celebrates the achievements of young people in sport.

Under the scheme the council's PE and Sports Development Team last year distributed over 200 awards to young people in the county including more than £15,000 to help them with their sporting ambitions. This year the team hopes to allocate a similar amount.

Councillor David Elkin, the County Council's Lead Member for Learning and School Effectiveness said: “There is a tremendous amount of young sporting talent out there in our county. These awards not only give us the chance to applaud some of our excellent young sporting stars but they also mean we can support them in their sporting ambitions with small grants.”

The closing date for nominations and applications is Friday 26 February, 2010. The applications will then be assessed and the awards will be made at a special evening to celebrate the sporting successes of the county's young people which will be held in the spring.

To qualify for an award, the young person must meet the following criteria:

  • be aged over 11 and under 19 on 31 August 2010
  • attend an East Sussex Children's Services Authority maintained secondary school, community college or special school
  • compete in his or her respective sport at county, regional or national level (that is representing East Sussex, the south east or England)
  • compete in a sport recognised by Sport England.
