Over the last year East Sussex County Council Library and Information Service has been in discussion with the Wadhurst Hall and Field Committee regarding the possibility of the library moving into the former Social Club.
Wadhurst Hall and Field Committee are in the process of renovating the old Social Club and the resulting new space will become a brand new library which is approximately three times the size of the existing one. This will improve and enhance the service to the rural community, provide opportunities for adult learning and offer a wider choice of library materials in a much improved environment.
Local people and schoolchildren have recently been asked what they would like to see in the new library, what materials they would use and events they would like to attend. All these comments will be fed back into the type of service that will be delivered. We will certainly be offering a wider choice of books and providing six public access computers which people can use free of charge. People can look forward to a new library with comfortable seating, a space to study, read and spend time with their friends and family.
This is an exciting development and the opening is planned by early summer 2010.
Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services at the County Council, said: “This is a new chapter in the history of Wadhurst Library and fantastic news for library users in the area. Local residents can look forward to a much better library – bigger, brighter with modern facilities. We're pouring millions of pounds into new library developments and library refurbishments right across East Sussex and now Wadhurst is part of what is our biggest ever library improvement programme.”
