Press release: Further time for say on waste and minerals

Tuesday 12 January 2010

Because of the poor weather conditions residents of East Sussex and Brighton & Hove are being given even more time to comment on a strategy for managing waste and minerals over the coming years.

Consultation on the Waste and Minerals Core Strategy (Preferred Strategy) had already been extended from 2 December to Friday 15 January 2010, but the deadline has now been extended a further 10 days to Monday 25 January 2010.

East Sussex County Council's Lead Member for Transport and Environment, Councillor Matthew Lock, said: "This is a very important stage in planning for the future of East Sussex and Brighton & Hove and I am keen to ensure that no-one is disadvantaged in sending in their comments by the poor weather conditions. This extension will give people a bit more time to make sure they get their responses to us.

"So far we have received nearly 1000 letters and emails and I am very pleased with the level of response so far. We must also emphasise this is not the end of the consultation process, there will be more liaison on the disposal of waste."

Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, Brighton & Hove's Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "It is important that local residents have adequate opportunity to put their views forward through their parish councils and that we allow sufficient time for this to happen. The severe weather will have affected everyone's ability to do this and an extension is a sensible and proportionate response."

The Waste and Minerals Core Strategy has two main functions:

  • It will set out how and where East Sussex County Council and Brighton & Hove City Council consider waste should be dealt with up to 2026.
  • It will also set out where minerals, such as sand and gravel, should be extracted. These are important resources which provide essential raw materials to the construction industry.

The consultation document, known as the ‘Preferred Strategy',very broadly defines the kind of areas in East Sussex and Brighton & Hove which might be the best places for waste management facilities (these are called Areas of Search). Any feedback received during the consultation will used to shape the Councils' final planning policies for managing waste and minerals.

Once it is finalised and adopted, the Waste and Minerals Core Strategy will be used to help the councils decide whether future proposals for new waste and minerals development should be given planning permission.
