Press release: Winter emergency teams praised by County Chairman

Monday 11 January 2010

Council emergency teams and carers battling the worst winter for thirty years to keep services moving have been praised by the Chairman of East Sussex County Council.

Councillor Rupert Simmons says that an army of unsung heroes are looking after vulnerable people in the community and keeping main roads clear of ice and snow right across East Sussex.

Councillor Simmons said: “Our social care teams have been continuing to look after elderly clients, many of whom live in rural areas or are off the beaten track. Our highways teams have spread thousands of tonnes of grit and salt to keep our main routes open. And our staff have also been flexible in order to help out such as our Rights of Way Rangers who have been using their land rovers to deliver meals on wheels.”

“We are currently experiencing the worst extended cold weather spell for thirty years. Right across the UK, local authorities and emergency services are facing real problems dealing with the extreme weather. Our emergency teams are working all hours, day and night and are doing an amazing job and I would like to thank them all for their dedicated efforts.”

The battle to keep schools open was also highlighted by the Chairman. Many Headteachers had to keep their schools closed during the coldest spell but the Chairman says these decisions were not taken lightly.

“We understand the pressure on parents and carers who need to juggle work commitments and childcare and no-one wants our pupils' education to be disrupted,” said Councillor Simmons. “Headteachers have to take into account a number of factors but first and foremost is the safety of our pupils and staff. They also need to consider safety of travel, availability of public transport and availability of staff, many travelling from wider distances and the conditions of the school site.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the many members of the public who are helping in their own local communities whether it's clearing paths and pavements or checking on elderly neighbours. This is a wonderful example of community spirit.”
