The new buses feature low-floor easy-access for parents with buggies and people in wheelchairs, state-of-the-art design giving a comfortable journey, and closed circuit television cameras for passenger's safety and security. The buses are fitted with "Euro 5" engines which are the latest standard for clean engines with minimal carbon dioxide emissions.
The buses will replace older buses on the following routes:
• 119 & 120 Seaford Town
• 145 Newhaven Town
• 123 Newhaven – Lewes via villages along the C7
Approximately 4,500 passenger journeys are made per week on these services.
Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Member for Transport and Environment said, "It's marvellous to see these new buses in action. Rider buses are used by all ages, from children travelling to and from school to people going to work or visiting family and friends. Catching the bus rather than taking the car helps reduce carbon dioxide emissions and combat climate change. "
Christian Harmer, Chairman of Renown Coaches said, "The contracts for the operation of bus services on behalf of East Sussex County Council are extremely important to our company and we were delighted to invest over £400,000 in providing these new buses for service in the Newhaven and Lewes areas."
‘Rider' buses are sponsored by the County Council. Rider bus services are often the only public transport in rural and suburban areas. Fares are competitive and return tickets can be used for a return journey on other local services in the same area, or another Rider service. We provide these services to supplement the commercial bus services.
