Library users will be able to borrow an electricity monitor in the same way they borrow a book. Once it is installed in the house, a portable handheld display shows the electricity output at that time, as well as the cost, so people can see the effect of, for example, turning on the TV or putting the kettle on.
It gives householders the chance to reduce energy use, save money and benefit the environment through reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
The meters will be available to borrow from Lewes Library from Monday 19 October. They can be borrowed for three weeks and renewed for a further three weeks after this time, as with a library book. The meter is easy to use and simply clips on to the wires from a domestic electricity display meter. Once this pilot is complete the scheme will be expanded to all areas of the county in early 2010.
This is a joint scheme between East Sussex County Council and Lewes District Council.
