Press release: Schools cycle competition

Monday 29 June 2009

Primary school children from across the county will be taking part in the annual cycle competition at Herstmonceux Castle on Sunday 5 July from 9.30am.

The competition tests the children’s knowledge and skills of cycling safely on the roads through practical cycling manoeuvres, a theory paper and a fun obstacle course.

The winner will receive prizes including a brand new mountain bike, and all children that take part in the competition will receive a specially engraved medal on a ribbon.

The competition, run by the County Council’s road safety team, is part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to promote safe cycling and reduce child road casualties.

Reporters and photographers are invited to the event. If you wish to attend then please contact Elizabeth Leeding – phone: 01273 482490 or email: liddy.leeding@eastsussex.gov.uk

Further information

Children have been asked to compete for showing particular ability in the County Council’s cycle safety training which takes place at schools throughout the year.

The competition is based on the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) 'Safer Cycling' cycle training programme which has been developed to help children learn and practise accident avoidance skills, particularly for dangerous right turn manoeuvres where they are most at risk.
