County Council rangers were on hand to warn visitors not to go near Rye Harbour Road whilst the clean-up operation was underway. However, despite the spill and clean-up, the nature reserve remains open.
For more than 35 years Rye Harbour Nature Reserve has been a great place to discover coastal and wetland wildlife. You will see many seaside plants and animals that you will not find in other parts of East Sussex.
At this time of year, people can find a great range of migratory birds and more seaside plants in flower.
As summer approaches, breeding birds include many species of terns, waders, ducks, and a spectacular display of shingle plants such as Sea Pea and Sea Kale.
There are four bird watching hides (all with some wheelchair access), a network of footpaths and an information centre opened by volunteers on most days.
