Press release: Annual parking report published

Monday 2 March 2009

The latest annual report on parking and enforcement in East Sussex has been published.

It focuses on how parking controls have helped stop or reverse the growth in traffic circulating in town centres, which can be damaging to the environment; and examines the latest statistics on enforcement.

The report explains how our parking charter and policy guidelines aim to ensure the rules are applied consistently and fairly. It also busts a number of myths, including:

  • issuing parking tickets is not a licence to print money – it often costs more to enforce regulations than is collected in penalty charges, and
  • Civil Enforcement Officers in East Sussex are not on commission.

Lead Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, Councillor Matthew Lock said: “Most of us have a love-hate relationship with parking. Nobody likes to pay to park and even less to receive a parking ticket but we all complain if an illegally parked vehicle causes congestion or, even worse, prevents an emergency vehicle from getting through. We have to strike a balance and in this report we explain how we’re doing that.

“I welcome the fact it also gives people an opportunity to see for themselves how the surplus income we’ve generated from parking has been used to bring forward local improvements such as pedestrian crossings, real time bus information or extra bus services.”

We published our first annual parking report in 2006, and were commended by the independent parking watchdog – the Traffic Penalty Tribunal – for being the first authority in the country to do so. The latest report gives even more detailed statistics and other authorities are now required to publish similar reports.

The parking charter is about fairness. Motorists who park properly can expect us to enforce the rules sensitively. Those who don’t can expect to be caught and pay penalty charges. For more information about the charter visit our parking enforcement section.
