Press release: Pupils unveil wall of support

Tuesday 24 March 2009

A mammoth piece of artwork produced by East Sussex pupils during Anti-bullying week last year is set to go on display.

The Wall of Support display is the result of more than 1,500 pieces of artwork created by pupils last November on the theme of 'Being different, belonging together'.

The individual pieces of artwork have now been pulled together and displayed in a 'wall' of artwork that powerfully expresses how we are all different yet all belong to one community.

The Wall of Support will be unveiled at a special ceremony on Friday 27 March at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill and will then tour the schools who took part in the competition.

Councillor David Elkin, Lead Member for Learning and School Effectiveness said: “This piece of artwork is a powerful representation of how young people feel about their differences and about the richness of diversity. It was a great theme for anti-bullying week – celebrating all the things that make us different yet join us together.”

The competition saw members of the council’s Anti-Bullying Team working with a resident graffiti artist in six specific schools, and was just one of a wide range of events and activities that took place during the week. The specific schools that took part were:

  • Peacehaven Community College
  • Guestling Bradshaw Primary School
  • Hillcrest School
  • Hailsham Community College
  • Marshlands Primary School and
  • Heathfield Community College.

Councillor David Elkin, added: “We know how important the issue of bullying is for young people and for the community as a whole. I am pleased to say that the County Council and all of our schools take bullying extremely seriously and are committed to tackling the issue where it occurs.

“This competition was a great way of getting young people to tackle the issue of their individual differences during Anti-Bullying Week. Of course the work of our Anti-Bullying Team, who work with schools and individual families, goes on all the time but anti-bullying week does give us the opportunity to put the issue firmly in the spotlight.”

Information for parents and carers and young people on bullying is available on our Bullying pages.
