Press release: Talking books – author events for school pupils

Wednesday 18 March 2009

Pupils from secondary and primary schools in East Sussex and Brighton & Hove will hear some of their favourite stories brought to life this month by a trio of top writers.

East Sussex County Council's Schools Library and Museum Service (SLAMS) has invited Marcus Sedgwick, Livi Michael and Andrew Norriss to visit East Sussex and Brighton & Hove over the next few weeks to talk about their books. The writers will be talking to school pupils at seven different events.

SLAMS provides library and museum loan services to schools in both East Sussex and Brighton & Hove and the events are part of the work to encourage children to read and enjoy books. The primary school events are also part of the East Sussex Children's Book Award initiative.

Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services, said: “I'm delighted that our service is working with schools to promote these events. It's extremely important that we encourage our young people to read more and enjoy books. These author events really help as the pupils get to hear from the writers themselves about their favourite stories.”

The first author event is on Friday 20 March at the Underground Theatre in Eastbourne. Year 7 and 8 student teams from 11 secondary schools in East Sussex and Brighton & Hove will be taking part in a book quiz. The winning team will be presented with their prize by Marcus Sedgwick, author of ‘Blood Red, Snow White' and the Raven Mysteries Series. Marcus will then be giving a talk and signing books.

Author events have also been organised as part of the East Sussex Children's Book Award. Five books are on the short list and two of the short-listed writers, Livi Michael, author of ‘Sky Wolves' and Andrew Norriss, author of ‘The Portal' will be visiting primary schools during March and early April.

Livi Michael will be at Rudyard Kipling Primary School in Brighton & Hove on Tuesday 24 March 2009 at 1.45pm. Livi will then be at St Mary the Virgin School in Hartfield on Wednesday 25 March at 10.30am. Pupils from Jarvis Brook School, Ocklynge School (Eastbourne) and Mark Cross School will also be attending. Livi will end the mini-tour at Newick Primary School at 1.45pm on 25 March. St Pancras RC Primary School (Lewes), Laughton Primary School and Hawkes Farm Primary School (Hailsham) will also be at the Newick Primary event.

Andrew Norriss will be at Mile Oak School (Brighton & Hove) at 10.45am on Tuesday 31 March. Other schools attending are Cottesmore St Mary's RC Primary and Benfield Primary. Andrew will be at Meeching Valley Primary School (Newhaven) at 1.45pm on 31 March. Andrew will then be at West Rise Junior School (Eastbourne) at 10.40am on Wednesday 1 April with Battle and Langton School also attending this event.
