The Source Skate Park in Hastings has been opened thanks to a group of like-minded youngsters and a local business, helped along by East Sussex County Council.
Last year the County Council invited young people to bid for funding from its share of the Government's Youth Capital Fund (YCF) to help with community projects. One group of young people from Hastings took up the challenge. They wanted to see more skate facilities in the town and put in a bid for help. The group had to come up with the idea and convince a panel of young people that it was the best use of the money. As a result they were awarded £16,500 to fund a new indoor skate and BMX area at Braybrooke Road, Hastings.
They then teamed up with local skate shop The Source which owns the building and has a shop on site. They now have a fully functioning park complete with a bowl leading to a spine, half bowl and a vert wall.
The County Council's Youth Development Service will be using the park for a range of groups and project work. As the park becomes established it is hoped young volunteers will eventually run the project.
Councillor Meg Stroude said: “This is a fantastic example of young people working with both the public and the private sector to improve their own communities. These young people saw a great opportunity and worked really hard to make it happen. It is also great to see a local business engaging with young people and the local community to really make a difference.”
