The annual East Sussex Children’s Book Award will take place between January and May 2009 and hundreds of primary and junior school pupils are expected to take part.
East Sussex County Council Schools Library and Museum staff, who organise the award, have now announced the books that the young people will be scrutinising. They are:
- Born to Run by Michael Morpurgo
- Sky Wolves by Livi Michael
- The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd
- Shadow Forest by Matt Haig
- The Portal by Andrew Norris.
This year the award is being sponsored by HSBC Bank which will enable the organisers to send one free set of books to all participating schools. It also means that library staff will be able to organise more author events. The books and information packs will be sent to participating schools early in the New Year.
Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services at the County Council, said: “The award is part of the County Council’s work to promote the joy of reading and to encourage young people to pick up the reading habit. This year is the National Year of Reading so I’m delighted to be able to help launch the awards again at this time. I look forward to even more schools and young people taking part in 2009.”
Children at each participating school will be reading the books on the shortlist and voting for their favourites. Schools can organise their own book groups to discuss the titles, and award organisers will once again be arranging special events that will be attended by authors involved. In 2008, 29 schools across East Sussex took part in the awards.
