Press release

Two new traffic calming schemes for Hastings

Wednesday 8 October 2008

Two new traffic calming schemes have been approved for Elphinstone Road and Parkstone Road in Hastings.

The two schemes were approved in the Lead Member Meeting for Transport and Environment on Monday 7 October. Both schemes aim to improve safety by slowing the speed of traffic and providing facilities for people travelling on foot.

£83, 000 is being spent on the safety scheme for Elphinstone Road which will include:

  • measures to narrow the road through road markings, a traffic island, pedestrian refuges, and build-outs
  • vehicle-activated signs to warn drivers exceeding the speed limit
  • a mini-roundabout at the junction with Mount Pleasant Road, and
  • improvements to signs and road markings.

£95, 000 is being spent on the safety scheme for Parkstone Road which will include:

  • a puffin crossing on St Helens Road
  • a puffin crossing at William Parker Sports College
  • a zebra crossing to serve local shops, and
  • improvements to signs, road markings and parking restrictions.

Both schemes were included in the 2006/07 traffic calming priority list and developed with local members and a wide range of consultees. Public exhibitions regarding the schemes were held in July and August this year, receiving a good response from local people.

The Parkstone road scheme incorporates the pedestrian crossing in the adjoining St. Helen’s Road which was identified in a priority list for pedestrian crossing facilities in July 2007. The consultation on the Parkstone Road scheme was the first time school children have been directly consulted on a traffic calming scheme in East Sussex.

Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment said: "I am very pleased to give these schemes the go-ahead. They will help to reduce traffic speeds and protect people travelling on foot by providing better and safer roads. It is important that we spend our funds wisely by prioritising work. These sites have been chosen from many considered from around the county as being of most need at this time."

Work on the schemes is scheduled to start in January 2009.

Notes to editors

There are 25 sites on the current traffic calming list. Typically the County Council completes three new sites each year. The third scheme approved this year is Brodrick Road in Eastbourne which was approved by Lead Member in April.

Three new sites are being designed for the following financial year 2009/10, subject to approval by Lead Member. They are in the Milward Road area, Harley Shute Road and Mount Pleasant Road in Hastings.. The last of these three links to the Elphinstone Road scheme and the current design takes this into account.
