Happy Birthday Lewes Library!

Tuesday 26 August 2008

Lewes Library is celebrating its third birthday and local residents and library staff are set to mark the occasion with a special open day in September.

East Sussex County Council’s Library Service has organised the open day for Saturday 6 September (10am-4pm) with a programme that includes story and rhyme times, family history, children’s craft activities, an online subscription quiz and a prize draw with prizes donated by local businesses.

The County Council opened the £2m Library in Styles Field off Friars Walk in August 2005 and in its first year, 250,000 books, CDs and DVDs were lent and over 4,000 people became new members.

Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services, said: “Lewes Library has been a complete success story from day one and I hope that many people will join our library staff to help celebrate its third birthday at the open day.

“We’re investing millions of pounds in our library service and recently announced a big increase in new library members at Bexhill following its £436,000 refurbishment. I look forward to hearing about similar success stories when we build the brand new libraries we’ve got planned for Hastings, Rye and Newhaven.”

Lewes Library has won awards for its design and last year was highly commended in the UK and Ireland Public Library Building Awards. The awards recognise the best library developments and those nominated for awards are seen throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland as the benchmarks for public library facilities.
