Issued on behalf of the Central Rail Corridor Board: Rail study report concludes that reinstatement is not economically viable

Wednesday 23 July 2008

The Central Rail Corridor Board received the final report of the Network Rail study on Friday (18 July) which concluded that, although it is technically feasible, there is currently no economic case for rebuilding the Lewes – Uckfield rail line. The Board’s summary of the report and its decisions is now available online and the full report will be available on Friday.

No further work is proposed unless there are significant changes in government policy. Board members will be meeting with the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, Tom Harris MP, and will lobby Government for changes in investment criteria necessary to justify reviewing the position further.

Councillor Rupert Simmons, Chairman of the Central Rail Corridor Board, said: "There is a lot of professional expertise contained in the study and the Board is satisfied that, as far as they are aware, Network Rail has covered all the relevant issues."

Network Rail’s Lewes-Uckfield railway line reinstatement study will be available on the East Sussex County Council website on Friday 25th July 2008. Hard copies of the study will be available at local authority offices and some public libraries at the beginning of August.

The Board’s report including their decisions based on Network Rail’s study’s conclusions will be made available today on our pages about Public transport.

The Board will meet again in the near future.
