A spokesperson from the Council said: “We are very pleased with the result of the review of our planning procedures. We fully understand the concerns of people affected by this issue. Part of our job now is to reassure anyone who is worried that this is a safe and responsible option that will bring great benefits to the people of East Sussex, Brighton & Hove.”
The cost to the council taxpayers of East Sussex and Brighton & Hove of this process being derailed could have been enormous and far exceed – by many millions of pounds – the cost of the current arrangements.
East Sussex County Council priorities remain to reduce, reuse and recycle before energy recovery and landfill. Some waste can’t be composted or recycled but still needs to be properly managed and disposed of.
Incineration is a very cost-effective means of treating this residual waste, reducing its volume and making it less hazardous, and the energy created in the process can be used to create heat and power. The ERF is capable of generating up to 16.5MW of electrical energy which will be sold to the national grid and represents enough to supply power to over 16,000 homes at once.
