Organised as part of National School Grounds Week last month under the theme of “Love Your Grounds”, a competition challenged pupils across the county to design a scheme to improve their school grounds.
The two winning entries from Robsack Wood Community Primary School in St Leonards and St Michael’s Primary School in Withyham will now be turned into reality by East Sussex County Council and its grounds maintenance contractor.
In the competition pupils were asked to design on a piece of plain A3 paper an idea for improving their school grounds and, in 200 words, explain how this new feature would enhance their grounds for pupils, teachers and/or wildlife.
The design from pupils at Robsack Wood Primary School features a sensory garden for the school and nursery including wind chimes, flowers, bird tables and a seating area. Meanwhile pupils at St Michael’s Primary in Withyham designed a nature area with a bog garden, wigwam and hedgehog home.
The County Council’s ground maintenance contractor, Kent County Council Landscape Services, will now turn those winning designs into reality.
The runners-up schools: Peasmarsh School in Rye and Stone Cross School in Pevensey will also receive some fun new playground markings as their prize.
Cllr David Elkin, the County Council’s Lead Member for Learning and School Effectiveness said: “This competition was a great idea and the designs that came from the young people showed their immense creativity and imagination. The outdoor spaces at our schools are very important and more and more they are being used not just as places to play but also to learn.
“With increasing interest in wildlife and nature it’s no surprise to me that so many of the entries featured the environmental theme. The two winning designs look really exciting on paper and I’m looking forward to seeing them become a reality.”
