The challenge is organised by East Sussex County Council’s Library Service and aims to get more children to read and enjoy books. The initiative kicks off in libraries across the County on Saturday 19 July 2008 with an Olympic theme – to tie in with the Beijing Olympics which start in August.
The challenge this year is entitled ‘Team Read’ and children aged from four to 12 years can win their own gold medal simply by reading six books from their library. They will also earn rewards including pens, bookmarks and stickers along the way. Large print materials are available so that visually impaired children can join in. There will be a prize draw with extra prizes for children who complete the challenge which runs over the summer months until early September.
Little brothers and sisters won’t be left out of the fun as there is a special Bookstart Book Crawl where they can win a Bookstart Bear.
Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services, said: “This year is the National Year of Reading so I’m delighted that our Library Service is once again promoting the summer reading challenge. Reading is a key life skill and we want youngsters to pick up the reading habit at an early age. The challenge is a fantastic way to get children involved in reading and enjoying books.”
As an added bonus libraries will be running fun events throughout the holidays so if you fancy Bean Bag Olympics, High School Musical parties or a host of other fun activities, pick up a leaflet from your local library or visit our webpage about the Summer reading challenge.
