Young literary critics gather for book award

Thursday 26 June 2008

Pupils from primary schools in East Sussex and Brighton & Hove will join together in Eastbourne next week to find out the winner of the East Sussex Children’s Book Award.

The Book Award has been organised by East Sussex County Council’s Schools Library and Museum Service and children from seven primary schools will be attending the ceremony at Ocklynge Junior School, Eastbourne on Wednesday 2 July from 1.15pm until 3.00pm.

Young people from Ocklynge Junior, Hawkes Farm Primary (Hailsham), Battle & Langton Primary (Battle), The Haven VA CE/Methodist Primary (Eastbourne), Mile Oak Primary (Brighton), West Rise Junior (Eastbourne) and Herstmonceux Primary – will find out which children’s book, from a shortlist of five, has been voted the winner.

Since the start of the year, 29 schools have been reading the five titles: Victory by Susan Cooper, Moon Man by David Donohue, Storm Runners by Barbara Mitchelhill, The Truth Sayer by Sally Prue, and The White Giraffe by Lauren St. John and nominating their favourite book.

The Award is aimed at children in year five (aged 9–10 years old) and schools library staff have been busy visiting schools with authors and running activities for reading groups. Lots of children have sent in reviews of their favourite books and some have also taken part in a design a book jacket competition. Prizes will be presented for the best book reviews and book jacket designs.

The Schools Library and Museum Service has organised the Book Award to help encourage children to read more widely. This year has been designated National Year of Reading and library managers say that the award is part of the County Council’s work to promote the joy of reading.
