Press release: £2m Government funding for Cuilfail Tunnel upgrade

Tuesday 17 June 2008

Much needed refurbishment of the Cuilfail Tunnel in Lewes can now go ahead as East Sussex County Council has secured more than £2m of Government funding for the works.

This money will be spent on essential improvements to prolong the working life of this important structure, including lining the tunnel with new cladding and replacing the lighting. This will increase visibility, improve safety and reduce the cost of maintaining and lighting the tunnel. It will also enhance the tunnel's appearance.

These major works will start in January 2009 and take up to six months. The tunnel will be closed to allow work to take place at off-peak times during weekdays and possibly at weekends.

Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, said: "I am very pleased that we have managed to secure this funding from central government and the much needed refurbishment of the Cuilfail Tunnel can now go ahead."

More information about the dates and times of tunnel closures will be published as plans are confirmed. Residents and businesses affected by the works will be kept fully informed.
