Network Rail presented its final draft report on the possible reinstatement of the Lewes-Uckfield line to the Central Rail Corridor Board meeting on Friday 23 May.
Board members and observers had the opportunity to comment on and challenge the work that Network Rail and their consultants, Mott MacDonald, have undertaken to date.
East Sussex County Councillor Rupert Simmons, who chairs the Board, said: "This meeting provided an excellent opportunity for board members and observers to quiz Network Rail and Mott MacDonald on their work undertaken to date. As a consequence of the meeting it was accepted that further work is essential so the board can conclude whether there is a business case for reinstatement."
A key point agreed by all board members was that, first and foremost, the study must be fact and evidence-based in any recommendations made. A further board meeting has been arranged for 20 June, at which a final study report will be considered.
Councillor Simmons said: "A decision on whether or not to progress to a next stage study will be dependent upon the outcome of the board meeting in June. It is of utmost importance that the study is not hurried and that the conclusions reached are based on fact and not speculation.
"We very much hope to be in a position to draw a line one way or the other in June."
