Text service back to help asthma sufferers on pollution days

Thursday 29 May 2008

A free air quality text message alert service for asthma sufferers and people with other respiratory conditions is being introduced ahead of summer.

East Sussex County Council is one of several partners in the airAlert and airAlert-4-schools services, which are being launched at Wallands School, Lewes, on 3 June and Central School, Chichester, on World Environment Day, two days later.

The airAlert service sends messages to mobile or home telephones and via email at times when poor air quality is predicted. It is designed to inform sensitive people who may suffer from pollution, the day before poor air quality is expected, to help them make informed choices about managing their respiratory health in the coming hours and days.

The airAlert-4-schools service allows the information to be sent direct to teachers via text and email so that pupils can be informed when a pollution episode is expected.

Both services are provided by the Sussex Air Quality Partnership, which is made up of members from East and West Sussex local and county authorities, the Sussex Primary Care Trusts, the Health Protection Agency, the Environment Agency, Brighton University and the University of Sussex. The partnership also has close ties with King’s College London and Environmental Protection UK.

Anyone with asthma or a respiratory complaint can register for free online at the AirAlert website or by post by returning a Freepost response form in the airAlert leaflets at GP surgeries and clinics.
