The County Council is working with theatre group Circus Takeaway to present a Litter Awareness Workshop, which tackles the issue in a fun way. The Workshop will have visited 30 primary schools across the county before the end of May and Chairman, Councillor Bob Lacey visited the show when it stopped off at Rodmell Primary School near Lewes recently (19 May).
The workshop, designed for years 5/6, encourages pupils to discuss and challenge their own views and feelings surrounding litter, littering, fly-tipping and graffiti. There are also opportunities for the pupils to act out and develop solutions to potential peer pressure situations.
Children and schools are being encouraged to set an example to the rest of their community, showing how small steps can lead to big changes and improvements to the environment.
Councillor Bob Lacey, said: “I was delighted to attend Rodmell School’s litter workshop – the pupils have a really high level of understanding when it comes to environmental issues. The young people appreciated how important this issue is to their local community and what they can do to help reduce the problem of litter and fly tipping.”
Pupils who attend the shows are able to enter the ‘What’s Litter To YOU?’ photographic competition. The competition invites individuals or school groups to take photographs of where they live, go to school or play to show how it is affected by littering, graffiti or rubbish left by fly-tippers.
