As part of its on-going promise to keep the local community involved in and updated on the plans for the £37m High School, East Sussex County Council has produced a second newsletter for residents.
This follows an earlier newsletter and three public consultation events at which members of the public were able to meet the project and design teams, ask questions and express their views.
Working in partnership with the school, East Sussex County Council is building the state-of-the-art new facility with £33m from the Government’s Building Schools for the Future programme and £4m from the council’s own funds.
Cllr Keith Glazier, the County Council’s Lead Member for Children’s and Adult’s Services said: “We really are committed to keeping the local community involved in this project. It will, after all, be a fantastic resource for the whole community.
“In this newsletter we have outlined some of the design concepts behind the planned new school. This includes exciting and really innovative designs for larger open-plan multi-purpose learning zones and specialist technical areas.”
The new school, he added, would have a central social and learning heart surrounded by learning zones with light and airy open spaces. Hand in hand with the 21st Century design will go more flexible methods of teaching with personalised learning programmes designed for individual students
Cllr Glazier said: “Increasingly it is being recognised that the quality of the environment in which children learn makes a real difference to the way students approach learning. Everyone involved in this project is extremely excited at the way it is beginning to take shape.”
The current intention is to submit a planning application for the new school this summer. Subject to approval it is hoped that building work can start later this year with a target completion date late 2010.
