Sporting success celebrated

The sporting successes of young people from across East Sussex have been celebrated at a special awards ceremony.

Organised by East Sussex County Council, more than 800 people attended the11th annual Sports Development Awards at The Winter Gardens in Eastbourne on Tuesday evening (13 May).

The awards are an annual scheme run by the County Council to encourage and support sporting achievements among 11–18 year olds in the county. They include grants to help the young achievers with their sporting ambitions.

Over 200 young received awards this year and more than £12,000 in grants was given out by the County Council. The awards are given to 11–18 year olds attending maintained schools who have played at national, regional or county level in the past year. There were also team awards, teacher awards, sports leader awards and school sports co-ordinator awards.

Councillor Rupert Simmons, the County Council’s Lead Member for Learning and School Effectiveness said: “It is wonderful to see so many young people from East Sussex Schools rewarded for their high sporting achievement and also to see leaders and teachers recognised for the positive contribution they make to sport in their schools and community.”

Councillor Bob Lacey OBE, Chairman of the County Council, Councillor Simmons, and Matt Dunkley, Director of Children’s Services presented the awards.

Peter Crowley of Wave Leisure, Jeff Hart of Freedom Leisure and Sarah Hogg and Professor Jonathan Doust of the University of Brighton also attended to present the awards their respective organisations had sponsored.

Freedom Leisure sponsored some of the Team Awards and these were given out by managing Director Jeff Hart. They included:

  • U15 Girls Trampoline Team (Helenswood School)
  • U18 Boys Golf Team (William Parker Sports College)
