Plan to minimise congestion

Wednesday 23 April 2008

A three-point plan has been put in place to minimise disruption during the construction of a bus corridor on the A259 South Coast Road.

The move follows recent congestion caused by temporary traffic signals between Rottingdean and Saltdean.

East Sussex County Council, which is leading on the joint project with Brighton & Hove City Council, has agreed with the contractor that:

  • all future work involving deep excavation will, where possible, be planned for a weekend
  • temporary traffic signals will be operated manually to improve traffic flow when they are required at peak times
  • if the whole road needs to be opened in an emergency any trench could be temporarily be filled until the emergency passes, when the trench would be re-opened.

Together, these steps will ensure that the impact of the construction work is kept to a minimum.

Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Member for Transport and Environment, said: "The work associated with the A259 bus corridor is progressing well and it was unfortunate that the recent incident had such a widespread impact in the area. I am pleased to see that the County Council has responded rapidly in agreeing improved working methods with the contractor."
