The Government announced today (Thursday, 3 April) that the County Council would be one of 20 “Play Pathfinder” authorities in a first round of funding.
The money will be used to improve a number of play sites across the county and develop new ones including open recreation spaces and sport courts.
Some of the funds will be used to provide park rangers who will provide a regular presence, help key play areas safe, and run activities in some areas.
Councillor Keith Glazier, Lead Member for Children’s and Adults’ Services, said: “I am delighted we have managed to secure this funding. Providing fun, safe places for children and young people to play and socialise can give a real boost to communities.”
The bid from the County Council built on play strategies developed by each of the local district and borough councils in close consultation with communities.
Now there will be more consultation to make sure that the additional investment really meets the needs of local families. Major projects include:
- A new adventure playground in Hastings.
- Extending mobile play services to reach more rural communities
- Developing plans for more “homezones” and 20mph zones around play areas, so that traffic danger doesn’t stop children going out to play.

The funding will be allocated between the five districts and boroughs (Hastings, Eastbourne, Wealden, Rother and Lewes). The funding will be available over three years 2008–2011.
