Press release: County Council steps in to make sure bus service continues

Monday 17 March 2008

People in Westham and Pevensey will still be able to catch the number five bus after East Sussex County Council negotiated with bus companies to continue the service.

Eastbourne Buses announced the withdrawal of the local five route with effect from 23 March 2008 as it was unable to sustain the service for commercial reasons.

The withdrawal of this bus would have affected a large number of residents including pupils of Pevensey and Westham School who rely on the number five route to travel to school.

The County Council stepped in and following competitive tendering, Renown Cavendish won the County Council contract for the school journeys. As a result the company has agreed to extend their route 10 to provide an hourly service on Mondays to Fridays, replacing the number five service.

The revised route 10 will run between Beachlands, Pevensey Bay, Pevensey, Westham, Stone Cross, Shinewater, Langney, Asda, Seaside, Old Town, Hill Road, District Hospital and Sainsburys.

Renown Cavendish has also stepped in to provide replacement weekday services for Hill Road and Cherry Gardens, after Eastbourne Buses decided to withdraw their route seven for commercial reasons.

Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment said: “We need significantly more financial support from central Government for a modern transport system. However, although we are not in a position to supply further funding, we have negotiated with the bus companies and found a way for the service to continue. I'm very pleased that residents of Westham, Pevensey and Eastbourne will see the continuation of these services.”
