A big invitation to the big read

Thursday 28 February 2008

People in the Eastbourne area are being invited to join in a ‘mass read’ during the Eastbourne Festival.

East Sussex County Council’s Library Service is encouraging people to read and discuss Animal Farm by George Orwell during the ‘Eastbourne Big Read’ between March and the end of June. The initiative is part of the County Council’s celebration of the National Year of Reading.

The Library Service wants as many people as possible to take part and is asking reading groups and community groups to get involved. Groups are being given the opportunity to borrow sets of the book from the library.

Copies of Animal Farm are also available for individuals to borrow from Eastbourne Central Library and at Hampden Park Library, Langney Library, Pevensey Bay Library, Polegate Library and Willindon Library.

Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services at the County Council, said: “George Orwell is thought to have set Animal Farm in Willingdon, a place he knew well having spent five years at boarding school in Eastbourne so it is a very good choice for the Eastbourne Big Read. I hope local people join in with this major initiative and help us promote the joy of reading.”

The Eastbourne Big Read starts on Saturday 15 March 2008. Local schools can also get involved by reading the books selected for children: Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White and the Fergus series of books by Tony Maddox that continue the farm theme.

The National Year of Reading is a year-long celebration of reading, in all its forms. It aims to help build a greater national passion for reading in England – for children, families and adult learners alike.
