‘Word County’ will see professional writers including the creator of Inspector Morse, Colin Dexter and nationally acclaimed poets such as Jackie Kay coming to East Sussex.
Word County kicks off with a Writers’ Development Day at Battle Memorial Hall on Saturday 23 February. The programme also includes:
- Jonny Zucker marking World Book Day at Ringmer Community College on Thursday 6 March
- The Eastbourne Big Read at the County Council’s Eastbourne area libraries from Saturday 15 March until Sunday 30 March
- A Rother literary evening at the Ostrich Hotel, Robertsbridge on Thursday 20 March
- Colin Dexter at the Winter Garden in Eastbourne on Sunday 23 March
- Carole Hayman at the All Saints Centre in Lewes on Tuesday 1 April
- Poets John Agard, Grace Nichols and Imitiaz Dharker at the Hastings Museum and Art Gallery throughout March and April – with a special performance for Hastings school groups on Wednesday 30 April.
The initiative has been devised by the East Sussex Arts Partnership which is made up of East Sussex County Council, Eastbourne Borough Council, Hastings Borough Council, Rother District Council and Lewes District Council supported by Arts Council England.
Speaking on behalf of the Partnership, Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services at the County Council, said: “Word County will celebrate a sense of place and create opportunities to see and hear professional writers and speakers. But the programme goes further in offering local people the chance to join in with the events, especially in parts of the County where such opportunities may be limited and this year the programme aims to reach out to young people in particular.”
Most of the events are free but a few will have a charge for tickets either in advance or on the door.
You can also pick up copies of this free booklet from County Council libraries and tourist information centres.
