Young consumer crown up for grabs

Wednesday 30 January 2008

Four teams from two East Sussex schools are set to battle it out to find the county’s young consumer champions.

Teams from Bexhill College and Peacehaven Community School will go head to head at Eastbourne Town Hall on Tuesday 5 February 2008 when the Young Consumer of the Year Competition reaches the county final stage.

The winners will go forward to represent East Sussex in the regional final on Thursday 27 March in Maidstone. The national title will be decided in Bournemouth in June.

The national competition is organised locally by East Sussex County Council’s Trading Standards Service and the four teams contesting the county final have come through a preliminary round. Team members have to study topics ranging from consumer rights and responsibilities to safety and the environment.

The East Sussex winners will receive prizes for their school and individual prizes for each team member donated by our sponsors, Steamer Trading, West St Leonard’s Pharmacy, Homecare Eastbourne Ltd and MTC2.

Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services, said: “The competition is our major annual contribution to helping young people know their rights and responsibilities when buying and selling. It’s run along the lines of University Challenge and is both fun and educational. Our schools are up against hundreds of others from across the country who take on the challenge to become the top young consumers and win a £1,000 prize for their school.”

The county final starts at 10am and spectators and supporters are welcome.
