East Sussex County Council’s Trading Standards Service, the Safer Wealden Partnership and Westham Parish Council want to set up the scheme to deter cold callers and bogus traders from operating in the area.
The partners want to know what local people think about their plans and will be holding a public consultation from Monday 4 February until Monday 18 February 2008. This will be an opportunity for residents, businesses and faith groups in the Westham area to ask questions and to give their views to Trading Standards.
People interested in taking part in the consultation can contact Louise Baxter at the County Council’s Trading Standards Service on 01323 418228 or email louise.baxter@eastsussex.co.uk. General information about no cold calling zones can be found on the Trading Standards Central website.
Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services at the County Council said: “Community safety is one of our top priorities and so I am delighted that we are supporting this proposal. Setting up a no cold calling zone is a warning to unwanted callers and bogus traders to keep out and I hope that local people in Westham give it the green light.”
If the plans are approved a launch date will be organised and further information made available to residents. Signs would go up at the entry and exit points of the major roads in and surrounding Westham to ensure cold callers get the message that they are not welcome in the area.
