School children in fine festive voice for the Great Big Christmas Sing

Tuesday 27 November 2007

Thousands of school children from across East Sussex will help the county prepare for Christmas with a series of concerts in the run up to the festive season.

The Great Big Christmas Sing concerts which will be taking place next week have been organised by the East Sussex Music Service and will involve more than 3,000 school pupils. The evening concerts have been arranged in Eastbourne, Bexhill, Hastings, and Brighton.

The events kick off on Monday 3 December with a concert involving 350 pupils, the South Downs Youth Concert Band and the Eastbourne Music Centre senior choir at the Winter Garden in Eastbourne.

On the same day the Bexhill schools’ consortium will be holding a concert at the De La Warr Pavilion. This will be followed by another concert at the same venue on Tuesday 4 December.

On Tuesday 4 December, 1,000 pupils will join with the South Downs Youth Orchestra and Academy Voices from the East Sussex Academy of Music for a concert at the Brighton Centre. This will feature a specially-written brand new 12-song work called 'Christmas Shopping' which will take an unusual look at the Christmas story.

The venue for the concert on Wednesday 5 December will be the White Rock Theatre in Hastings where more than 300 young voices will team up with the Hastings Jazz and Youth Band.

Thursday 6 December sees another concert at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill featuring 300 children and the Hastings Area Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Finally, the following Monday (10 December) the East Sussex Brass band and the Eastbourne Music Centre Senior Choir will be joined by 300 school children for a concert at the Congress Theatre in the town.

With the exception of the event at the Brighton Centre, all the concerts will feature the work 'Begin Again at Bethlehem' which was first performed in the county last year. They will also include traditional carols.

Councillor Rupert Simmons, Lead Member for Learning and School Effectiveness at East Sussex County Council said: “Following last year’s outstanding choral performances these concerts will once again give children from schools across the county the opportunity to work and sing together in some of the biggest theatres in the county.”

More details on the concerts including timings, ticket and box office information, are available on our Music events page.
