The pocket-sized ‘Think Safety’ leaflet is aimed at young people aged 11 years and over and is packed full of safety advice and information. It can be read alone by young people or as part of a conversation on personal safety with a parent or carer.
Topics include advice on:
- using public transport safely
- how to plan to stay safe
- groups and aggression
- using the Internet and mobile phones safely
- preparation for driving
- going out with friends safely.
Think Safety provides lists of other websites and helplines such as get connected, crimestoppers, talktofrank.com and bully online. Details about other services in East Sussex such as the Under 19’s Substance Misuse Service, the anti-bullying team and where to find more information and advice on the County Council’s website are also included.
Councillor Keith Glazier, Cabinet Member for Children’s and Adults’ Services, said: “This initiative underlines our commitment to community safety and in this case the safety of young people. This is a good example of collaborative working with the different agencies under the East Sussex Safer Communities Partnership umbrella producing a really useful guide for young people.”
Produced by the East Sussex Safer Communities Partnership working with the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, the leaflet is being distributed through youth centres, schools and Police Community Support Officers and will also be available in council buildings. People can access the information on the Internet at SafeInEastSussex.org and can also obtain a copy of the leaflet by telephone on Eastbourne 01323 466549.
Young people will be able to read advice about crime and how to prevent becoming a victim of crime. Travel advice includes information about staying safe while walking, cycling, driving or travelling on buses, trains and taxis. Internet advice covers chat rooms and being careful with personal information and mobile phone safety outlines using the phone safely and text bullying.
