East Sussex County Council’s Library, in Styles Field off Friars Walk, has been highly commended in the UK and Ireland Public Library Building Awards 2007.
The awards, jointly sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, the Public Libraries Group and the Irish Library Council – An Chomhairle Leabharlanna – recognise the best library developments and those nominated for awards are seen throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland as the benchmarks for public library facilities.
Lewes Library was highly commended in the ‘heart of the community’ category which is ‘for new or refurbished libraries which have been designed to enhance and/or regenerate the library space to facilitate the delivery of new, inclusive, innovative services to the whole community.’
The County Council opened Lewes Library in August 2005 at a cost of £2m. In its first year, a quarter of a million books, CDs and DVDs were lent and over 4,000 people became new members.
