Last chance to have your say on cycling

Wednesday 31 October 2007

Councillors are asking for people’s views on cycling in East Sussex.

East Sussex County Council’s Transport & Environment Scrutiny Committee is reviewing the current cycling strategy in the county. As part of this, people are being asked for their views on a range of issues including why people cycle, and what could be done to get more people cycling instead of using a car.

These issues are covered by a questionnaire about people’s cycling habits, whether they cycle to work or for pleasure, and the benefits of doing so. Views are sought from both keen cyclists and those who never intend to cycle. The questionnaire takes less than five minutes to complete.

There are many good reasons for people to cycle. Cycling can be a fun hobby allowing people to explore the East Sussex countryside as well as an easy way to get to work. It has health benefits and can contribute to a greener transport system. Yet cycling in East Sussex is not seen as a popular activity. According to the 2001 census just 1.7% of all journeys in the county were being made by bicycle.

Councillors want to find out more about cycling in East Sussex, to help make better decisions which can make a real difference by reducing traffic congestion, increasing road safety, and improving the environment and well being of the people of East Sussex.

The closing date is 5 November. People who would like to take part can complete the questionnaire onlie in our Have Your Say section: complete the cycling survey.
