Young Consumers of the Year involves hundreds of schools across the country, with pupils being tested on their knowledge of consumer issues including consumer rights, finance, food, health, safety, the environment and Europe.
The team of young people with the top consumer credentials who go on to win the national final next year will receive a £1,000 prize for their school.
Organised locally by East Sussex County Council’s Trading Standards Service, the competition is open to teams of four from years 10, 11 and 12. It is both fun and educational and gives young people a practical understanding of their consumer rights.
Councillor Bob Tidy, Cabinet Member for Community Services said: “The competition is run along the lines of University Challenge and tests the students on commercial current affairs and their rights and responsibilities when buying or selling goods and services. I am delighted that our Trading Standards Service is once again organising this competition and in the process helping to support and educate our young consumers.”
Winners of each East Sussex heat will go through to the regional final to be held in Kent. They will join teams from all over the south east region and will battle for a place in the national final to be held in Bournemouth in June next year.
Secondary schools in East Sussex wishing to take part must register their interest by Monday 12 November 2007. For more information about entering or sponsoring the event please contact Louise Baxter at Trading Standards on Eastbourne 01323 418224.
