East Sussex GCSE results improve for seventh year running

Friday 24 August 2007

Students in East Sussex are celebrating their best ever GCSE exam results, according to provisional results.

The preliminary GCSE results announced yesterday (Thursday 23 August) show a significant rise in standards across the county for the seventh consecutive year and the biggest rate of improvement ever.

Collated from the county’s 27 mainstream secondary schools, the figures show that over 58% of pupils gained five or more A*-C grades compared with 55% last year.

East Sussex County Council’s Lead Member for Learning and School Effectiveness, Councillor Rupert Simmons, said: “First and foremost I would like to congratulate our students and pay tribute to the hard work they have put into achieving these results. I am thrilled to see so many successes.

“The results also demonstrate the skill and dedication of our teachers and the support of parents and governors. I am delighted that this is our best ever year-on-year improvement but we will, of course, continue to work hard to improve performance still further.”

The provisional results show that several schools have made significant improvement on last year. They are:

  • Willingdon Community School (15% more pupils passed 5 GCSEs with grades A*- C)
  • Ringmer Community College (12%)
  • Heathfield Community College (11%)
  • Chailey School (9%)
  • Bexhill High School (9%)

In the following schools, the provisional results show that at least 70% of entrants gained five or more A* - C grades:

  • Bishop Bell C of E School (83%)
  • St Richard’s Catholic College (79%)
  • Claverham Community College (76%)
  • Heathfield Community College (75%)
  • Eastbourne Technology College (74%)
  • Willingdon Community School (73%)
  • Bexhill High School (71%)

A more detailed analysis of grades will be available later in the year once the figures have been submitted to the Department for Children, Schools and Families (formerly DfES) and any grading appeals processed.
